What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of shaping how AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews describe, cite and recommend a brand. SEO competes for a ranked link on a results page; GEO competes for a place, and an accurate description, inside the generated answer itself.

What is GEO in one sentence?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making AI engines mention, cite and accurately describe your brand when they generate an answer. The engines in scope are the ones people now ask instead of searching: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode.
The shift is simple to state. SEO fights for a position on a page of links. GEO fights for a sentence inside the answer. If the answer names your competitor and not you, you lost a sale you never saw.
Where does the term GEO come from?
The term was named in the research paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Aggarwal and colleagues (researchers from Princeton and IIT Delhi), first posted in November 2023 and accepted to KDD 2024. The authors built a benchmark of queries and tested how content changes affect a source's visibility inside generative answers. Their abstract reports that GEO methods can boost visibility by up to 40%. Adding quotations, statistics and cited sources were among the strongest methods; keyword stuffing, the old SEO reflex, did little.
That finding is the whole discipline in miniature: engines reward evidence, not repetition.
How does GEO work?
Most AI answers that cite sources are built in two steps. First the engine retrieves pages, from its own index or a live web search. Then a model reads those pages and writes a summary. GEO works on both steps.
Get retrieved. A page that is never retrieved is never cited. Google states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. That makes technical SEO the floor of GEO, not its rival.
Get extracted. Models lift the clearest passage they can find. Question-shaped headings, a direct answer in the first sentences, tables, lists and FAQ blocks make your content easy to quote.
Get described correctly. Engines assemble a picture of your brand from every source they can read: your site, profiles, directories, reviews, press, forums. Conflicting facts across those sources are how wrong answers start. One name, one description, the same facts everywhere.
Get vouched for. Being named on the third-party sources an engine actually retrieves matters more than a link from a directory nobody reads.
What is the difference between GEO, SEO and AEO?
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full name | Search Engine Optimization | Answer Engine Optimization | Generative Engine Optimization |
| What you win | A ranked link | The single direct answer (featured snippet, voice reply, answer box) | A mention, citation or recommendation inside an AI-written answer |
| Where it shows | Search results pages | Answer boxes, voice assistants, AI answers | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Unit of competition | The page | The passage that answers one question | The passage, the fact and the entity |
| Main scoreboard | Rankings, clicks, CTR | Snippet and answer ownership | Mention rate, accuracy, citation rate, Share of Model |
| Worst case | You rank on page two | Someone else's answer is read out | You are absent, or described wrong |
They stack. SEO gets you indexed, AEO makes your answers liftable, GEO makes sure the generated answer names you and gets your facts right. For the full breakdown, read What is AEO and GEO vs SEO: what changes, what stays, what dies.
How do you measure GEO?
Search Console shows Google clicks and impressions. It does not show what ChatGPT said about you yesterday. GEO needs its own scoreboard:
| Metric | The question it answers |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | Across the prompts your buyers ask, how often is your brand named? |
| Accuracy | When you are named, are the facts right: pricing, services, location, founders? |
| Sentiment | Is the description positive, neutral or negative? |
| Citation rate | Does the engine link to your site, or to someone else's page about you? |
| Share of Model | How often are you named compared with competitors in your category? |
Run the same prompts across several engines, because each retrieves differently and they rarely agree. You can do a first pass by hand with this 10-minute check.
To do it continuously, 99Visibility audits how ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude describe your brand, flags wrong facts and gaps, and shows you what to fix. There is a Free plan, and paid plans run from $49 to $149 a month.
Why does GEO matter for Lebanese and Arabic-speaking brands?
Because the answer engines already answer questions about your market, in English and in Arabic, whether or not you gave them anything to work with. When the source material is thin, the model fills the gap with whatever it can find, and that is often a competitor, an outdated directory listing or nothing at all.
In Arabic, the acronym alone is ambiguous: a search for "ما هو geo" surfaces geotextiles and geometry. The Arabic term in use is تحسين محركات البحث التوليدي, and we pair it with the acronym on our Arabic GEO page. If you want this done for your brand, see our GEO and AI visibility service.
How do I start with GEO?
- Baseline. Measure mention rate and accuracy across the main engines before changing anything.
- Fix the facts. Wrong pricing in an AI answer costs more than a missing mention. Correct it at the source.
- Restructure your top pages. Question headings, answer-first paragraphs, tables, FAQs, schema.
- Earn citations where engines look. Use your audit to see which third-party sources get retrieved.
- Re-measure monthly. Answers drift with model updates and new content.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does GEO stand for in marketing?+
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of shaping how generative AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews mention, cite and describe a brand.
Does GEO replace SEO?+
No. Most AI engines retrieve web pages before they write an answer, and Google says pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as links in AI Overviews. SEO is the foundation; GEO is the layer built on top of it.
Is GEO the same as AEO?+
No, but they overlap. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) targets the single direct answer, such as a featured snippet or a voice reply. GEO targets AI-generated answers, where you need to be mentioned, cited and described accurately, often alongside competitors.
How long does GEO take to show results?+
Usually weeks, not days. Engines need to re-crawl your corrected pages and the third-party sources that mention you, and model answers shift gradually. That is why GEO is measured monthly against a baseline.
Can I control what ChatGPT says about my company?+
Not directly, but you can shape it. You cannot edit a model, but you control the sources it reads: your own site's facts and structure, consistent profiles across the web, and accurate mentions on third-party sites the engines retrieve.
